A figure 8 bridle with a sheepskin-lined nosepad, for jumping and galloping.

The figure 8 is a functional noseband, not a style. It crosses above and below the bit rather than sitting flat across the nose, which keeps the strap clear of the nostrils and leaves the airway fully open at speed. That is why it is standard on eventers and common on jumpers. Where the two straps cross sits a sheepskin-lined pad, which is the piece protecting the thin skin over the bridge of the nose from a strap under tension. The browband is padded and contrast stitched, hardware is stainless steel, and non-slip rubber-lined reins are included.

Specifications:

  • Figure 8 noseband, crossing above and below the bit
  • Sheepskin-lined nosepad at the crossing point
  • Padded browband with contrast stitching
  • Stainless steel hardware
  • Non-slip reins with rubber-lined grip included
  • Black, Havana and Black Patent Leather
  • Sizes Cob, Full (Horse) and Oversize

A note on the options:

Patent Leather is a finish rather than a color: it is the black bridle in a high-gloss patent, and it appears in the color selector. Hardware is stainless steel on every version, which is why that selector offers only one choice.

Fit:

Standard bridle measurements vary by a quarter to a half inch, so measure the bridle currently in use rather than ordering by breed or height. On a figure 8 the crossing point should sit on the bridge of the nose, above the end of the nasal bone, not down on soft tissue. Set that first and adjust the straps around it.

What sets this one apart:

The noseband is a figure 8, crossing above and below the bit so the strap stays clear of the nostrils and the airway stays open at speed. A sheepskin-lined pad sits at the crossing point, over the thin skin on the bridge of the nose. Padded browband with contrast stitching, stainless steel hardware, and non-slip rubber-lined reins included.

Reins included:

Non-slip reins with a rubber-lined grip, which is the right pairing here: a bridle for cross-country and jumper rings is a bridle used in weather, and rubber holds when laced leather goes slick.

Why it is here:

The sheepskin nosepad. A figure 8 concentrates pressure exactly where the skin is thinnest, and a maker that lines the crossing point has thought about the horse wearing it rather than the class it is entered in.
