A standing martingale in flat leather. It runs from the girth, between the front legs, and buckles to the noseband, so it fastens to the horse's head rather than to the reins. A martingale is a training aid, and its fit is what makes it safe or unsafe.

Where the strap ends is the defining detail. Because this one ends at the noseband, it sets a fixed ceiling: the horse can carry its head anywhere below the length the strap is buckled at, and the strap comes tight above that. A running martingale instead ends in two rings that the reins pass through, and acts through the reins. The chest strap here is punched with a run of adjustment holes, and that is where the length, and so the ceiling, is set.

What sets this one apart:

This is the standing pattern, buckling to the noseband rather than ending in rings the reins pass through, and the two are not interchangeable. Because the strap ends at the noseband it sets a fixed ceiling, so the horse can carry its head anywhere below the length the strap is buckled at and the strap comes tight above that. The leather is flat, with no raised section and no decorative stitching, and the chest strap is punched with a run of adjustment holes where that length is set.

Rules on martingales differ by discipline and by venue, so check your own rulebook before you show.

Why it is here:

A standing martingale in plain flat leather, with the adjustment carried in the chest strap. It is the pattern for a rider who needs the martingale to fasten to the noseband rather than run through the reins.
