A pair of eight meter lunge lines in cotton webbing and nylon rope, usable as double lunge reins, long reins, or a single lunge line.
Two lines, eight meters each, is what makes this different from a single lunge line. A single line lets a horse be worked on a circle. A second line run around the outside of the horse, or behind the hindquarters, gives contact on both sides and control of the quarters, which is the difference between lunging a horse and long reining one. The construction is soft cotton webbing with nylon rope and a snap at each end, and there are no elastic inserts, which matters: elastic absorbs the small changes in contact that long reining is meant to teach a horse to answer.
Specifications:
- Sold as a pair, eight meters each
- Cotton webbing and nylon rope
- Snap fastening at each end
- No elastic inserts
- Stainless steel hardware
- Leather trim: Vegetable Tanned or Italian English
- Leather color: Black, Havana or Oak Brown
- Usable as double lunge reins, long reins, or a single lunge line
Three ways to use it:
Single lunge line. Use one and it behaves as an ordinary lunge line, at eight meters. Double lunge reins. Both lines, the outer one run around the horse, giving contact on both sides rather than one. Long reins. Both lines with the outer run behind the quarters, working the horse from behind at a distance. The last is the reason to own them, and it is a skill worth learning under instruction rather than from a description.
What sets this one apart:
It arrives as a pair rather than a single line, eight meters each, which is what long reining and double lunging require and what a single line cannot do. The webbing is soft cotton over nylon rope with a snap at each end and no elastic inserts anywhere in the length. Hardware is stainless steel and the trim is leather.
Why it is here:
No elastic inserts. Elastic is added to lunge lines to soften a snatch, and it also swallows the quiet half-ounce changes in contact that a horse is being asked to read. For long reining that is the wrong trade.
