A running martingale with the gap between its two upper straps filled in by a soft leather bib. A running martingale ends in two rings that the reins pass through, so it acts through the reins rather than fastening to the noseband. A martingale is a training aid, and its fit is what makes it safe or unsafe.
The bib is the defining part. On a plain running martingale the yoke splits into two separate straps, each ending in a ring, and the open space between them is where a horse can catch a strap in its mouth. A panel of soft leather closes that space, so there is no loose strap for the horse to take hold of. The bib is also less flexible than two independent straps, which holds the two rings in a steadier relationship to each other and helps keep the reins together. The chest strap is punched with a run of adjustment holes, and that is where the length is set.

What sets this one apart:
A panel of soft leather closes the space between the two upper straps, so there is no loose strap for a horse to catch in its mouth. The bib is also less flexible than two independent straps, which holds the two rings in a steadier relationship to each other and helps keep the reins together. This is a running pattern, ending in rings the reins pass through rather than buckling to the noseband, and the two are not interchangeable.
Rules on martingales differ by discipline and by venue, so check your own rulebook before you show.
Why it is here:
The bib closes the gap where a horse can catch a martingale strap in its mouth. That is a real failure mode on an open running martingale, and a leather panel is the direct answer to it.
