A Weymouth with a slanting, slightly curved mouthpiece and a forward-angled port, on the shorter 5 cm cheek.

The mouthpiece shape spreads pressure evenly across the tongue and reduces the load on the tongue edges, which is where a conventional Weymouth concentrates it. The anatomical shaping helps the bit sit comfortably and encourages relaxed acceptance of the double bridle. Herm Sprenger builds it with a Sensogan mouthpiece and stainless steel cheeks.

Specifications:

  • Slanting, slightly curved mouthpiece
  • Forward-angled port
  • Sensogan mouthpiece, stainless steel cheeks
  • 5 inch, 12 mm
  • 5 cm cheek

5 cm or 7 cm cheek:

The mouthpiece is identical. The cheek length sets the leverage. This 5 cm cheek is the shorter of the two and gives the milder leverage effect, which makes it the one to introduce a young or sensitive horse to a double bridle on. The 7 cm cheek increases the leverage for a horse already established in a double.

Why it is here:

Tongue edges. A Weymouth that loads the edges of the tongue produces the head carriage it was meant to refine and a horse that never quite settles. Angling the port forward moves that pressure to the center, where the tongue can absorb it.
