A thick eggbutt snaffle in stainless steel, with a mouthpiece of 1 3/4 inches in circumference.

Mouthpiece thickness decides how a snaffle feels, and this one is 1 3/4 inches in circumference. A thicker mouthpiece spreads the same rein pressure over more surface, which is generally the milder arrangement, but only on a horse with the mouth to take it. A horse with a thick tongue or a low palate has no room for a thick bit and is more comfortable in a thinner one. The eggbutt ends fix the mouthpiece to the ring so it cannot pinch the corner of the lip, and they give a quiet lateral steadiness without the strong shoulder of a dee.

Specifications:

  • Single jointed stainless steel mouthpiece
  • 1 3/4 in circumference
  • Eggbutt ends, 1 1/2 in long x 3/4 in wide
  • Rings 3 1/4 in long x 3 in wide
  • Nutcracker snaffle action
  • 5 in mouthpiece

What sets this one apart:

The mouthpiece is single jointed stainless steel, 5 inches wide and 1 3/4 inches in circumference, which is a thick mouthpiece. The eggbutt ends, 1 1/2 inches long by 3/4 inch wide, fix the mouthpiece to rings of 3 1/4 by 3 inches, so the join cannot pinch the corner of the lip. That cheek steadies the bit laterally without the strong shoulder of a dee.

A note on single joints:

A single joint closes into a V under rein pressure, which is the nutcracker action named above. On some horses the joint can reach the palate. If a horse consistently opens its mouth or throws its head in a single-jointed bit, a double-jointed mouthpiece is the usual next thing to try. Fit and mouth conformation are a job for someone who can see the horse.

Why it is here:

Published circumference and published ring dimensions. Thickness is the measurement that decides whether a bit suits a mouth, and this one is given as a number rather than as an adjective.
