Ovation describes the Sofia collection as classic style in modern materials, and the construction is genuinely split. The foot is full grain cow leather, which breaks in and takes polish. The shaft is a technical synthetic leather with the look of hide but breathable, durable, and carrying a hint of stretch that helps the fit. The Grip model adds an inner leg in breathable synthetic suede with a silicone horseshoe grip pattern. Moisture-wicking mesh lining, EVA insole, dual spur rests, a zipper protector and a traditional rubber sole system.

Fit:

Take three measurements before ordering: foot size, height from the floor to the bend of the knee, and calf circumference at its widest. One height and three calf widths. The synthetic shaft has a hint of stretch so it settles to the leg, but the foot is leather and will drop the way leather does.

What the grip panel does:

A silicone pattern on the inner calf holds against the saddle flap, which is the principle of a full seat breech applied to the boot instead. It is the reason to choose the Grip over a plain tall boot, and it is also why the care instruction says brush the grip rather than wipe it. Silicone holds dirt in the pattern and loses purchase once it is loaded up.
